Changing your citizenship status
Your citizenship status will change if you want citizenship of more than 1 country, you want to give up NZ citizenship, or the NZ government takes away your citizenship.
In this section
New Zealand allows dual citizenship or multiple citizenship — but some other countries don’t.
If you’re becoming a citizen of a country that doesn’t allow dual citizenship, you might have to give up your NZ citizenship.
In rare circumstances, the Minister of Internal Affairs can take someone’s New Zealand citizenship off them. They will no longer be able to use an NZ passport and may not be allowed to live here.
