New Zealand has agreements with many countries that allow people aged 18-35 to stay here for a year or more — the main reason should be tourism, with work or study as secondary activities.
Who can apply
Eligibility for a working holiday visa
To apply for a working holiday visa you must:
- be a citizen of a country with a working holiday visa agreement
- be aged between 18-30, or 18-35 for select countries
- meet other visa conditions — some may be specific to your country’s visa arrangement with NZ.

Before you apply, visit the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) website to:
- see a list of countries with a working holiday visa agreement — Working holiday visas, or
- search for a visa by name, for example, ‘USA working holiday visa’ — New Zealand visas.
Apply for a working holiday visa online
All working holiday visas must be applied for online — and only if the visa is ‘open’ for applications.
Register for an account online and apply — INZ
For most eligible countries you can apply from anywhere, including while you’re in NZ. Check the specific conditions on the INZ website.
Visa conditions
General conditions
Conditions will vary depending on your country of citizenship but generally you must:
- prove your identity — with a valid passport
- be in good health and of good character
- genuinely intend to meet the conditions of your visa
- be between the specified age range
- be a citizen of the country the visa is for
- have a ticket to leave NZ — or enough money to buy one
- have enough money to live on while in NZ
- not have had approval for this visa before — you cannot apply twice.
If your working holiday application has been accepted, you must arrive in NZ within the timeframe given — this is usually 1 year.

Some conditions that may be specific to your country of citizenship are:
- length of stay — for most countries this is 12 months
- age range — for most countries this is 18-30 years old
- visa quota — the number of visas given to your country
- educational qualifications
- English language requirements
- place of residence
- location when you apply
- medical insurance requirements.

Employment conditions
While you’re on a NZ working holiday visa:
- you must not accept a permanent job offer
- you must pay tax on your income.

You cannot renew a working holiday visa, but you may be able to extend your visa another:
- 3 months — if you’ve completed 3 months of seasonal work
- 11 months — if you’re on a Canada Working Holiday Visa
- 24 months — if you’re on a UK Working Holiday Visa.
