Help paying for childcare
Depending on how much you earn and how old your children are, your family may be able to get help with the cost of childcare.
For children under 5
20 hours free early childhood education
All 3, 4 and 5-year-olds can get free early childhood education for 6 hours a day, up to 20 hours a week.
If you have a dependant child who's under 5 (or under 6 if you get a Child Disability Allowance for them), you might be able to get a childcare subsidy. Your child has to be in approved care for at least 3 hours a week and you must be:
- on a low or middle income
- an NZ citizen or permanent resident, and
- the main person who looks after the child.
If you're not working or studying you may get a childcare subsidy for up to 9 hours a week
If you’re working, studying or there are special circumstances that mean you need childcare, you may get it for up to 50 hours a week.
For children aged 5 to 13
You can get help with the costs of before school and after school programmes for up to 20 hours a week and school holiday programmes for up to 50 hours a week.
