Accessibility statement
The current state of accessibility on the Govt.nz app and how improvements are being made. Digital accessibility is essential for disabled people and useful for everyone in a variety of situations.

About the accessibility of this app
The Digital Services branch of the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) owns and manages the content on the app.
The app is designed to be used by as many people as possible.
The app aims to:
- meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, as per the NZ Government Web Accessibility Standard.
- work on the most common devices and operating systems and with assistive technologies.

Conformance status — meeting the accessibility standards
Some parts of the initial version of the app may present barriers for some people. Work is being done to fix these issues and meet WCAG 2.2 at level AA.
Govt.nz app current accessibility issues
The following are some known accessibility issues. Work is underway to fix some of these issues and support is available for the other issues on a case-by-case basis.
Android app
- A few screens have moving images enabled by default. Use Android accessibility settings to disable moving images.
- The app is restricted to portrait view only.
- Some headings are only visual and not coded as proper headings. Screen reader users may not be able to use headings for navigation or to understand content structure.
- Some buttons do not have a clearly visible focus indicator when using the app with an external keyboard.
- The services and wallet screens contain small sized text that may be difficult to read.
iOS app
- Onboarding screens have instances where screen reader focus is not automatically set to the newly displayed screen.
- External keyboard users may be blocked from advancing from the Onboarding screens to the Home Screen. Use alternative methods such as speech input to work around this issue.
- A few screens have moving images.
- The app is restricted to portrait view only.
- Some headings are only visual and are not coded as proper headings. Screen reader users may not be able to use headings for navigation of to understand content structure.
- Some buttons do not have a clearly visible focus indicator when using the app with an external keyboard. Use iOS accessibility settings to improve the appearance of the focus indicator.
- Services ‘pin to home’ functionality cannot be operated using a screen reader.
- Services and wallet screens contain small sized text that may be difficult to read.
- Some decorative images may get announced with screen reader use.

If you cannot or do not wish to use the app, the Govt.nz website can be used. All service information in the app is on the Govt.nz website.
Working to improve the accessibility of the app
This is the first version of the app. This version was reviewed for accessibility issues during development from to . There is work planned to address the identified accessibility barriers and to further develop the app.
The app will continue to be reviewed for accessibility to see how it’s doing and where improvements can be made. User testing will also be carried out with future versions to identify other issues that impact disabled people.
