About the Govt.nz app | He Ara Hāngai
The Govt.nz app makes it easier to connect with government services — securely, conveniently and all in one place. The Govt.nz app is a new app for the NZ government.
Download the app
The app works on most modern iOS and Android devices. No account is needed.
You can download the app for free from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
A simpler way to access government services
The Govt.nz app brings together selected government services into one secure mobile app for iOS and Android. It’s designed to make it easier for New Zealanders to find, use and trust the services and support they need.
The app is completely optional — you’ll always be able to access services in other ways.
What you can do in the app now
- Find information and services: get information and access services from across government.
- Pin services to your home screen: save the services you use the most to your home screen for quick access.
- Set up your digital wallet: Get ready for the release of digital credentials (such as certificates, IDs and qualifications) as they’re made available by accredited organisations, including government, in .
- Receive emergency information: Access emergency warnings for your area from trusted sources like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). You need to set your location preferences within the app for this to work.
Your digital wallet
Your digital wallet is now available for set up within the Govt.nz app. You'll need a phone or device that supports biometrics, such as face recognition or fingerprint, to set up your wallet.
Your digital wallet is where you can securely store and use trusted digital credentials, such as IDs, licences and certificates, all in one place. The credentials are in a digital format and can be added to your wallet as they become available in New Zealand.
It’s a simple and secure way to access and share important information without carrying the physical version.
A number of accredited issuers are developing digital credentials. These are expected to be available in the Govt.nz wallet progressively from mid .
You choose which credentials to add. Your information stays on your device, not in the app. Once the wallet is available, you use your phone’s biometrics (fingerprint or face recognition) to keep your credentials secure on your devices.
You’re always in control of what you share. When needed, you can safely share your details with trusted organisations either online or in person.
Security in the app
Keeping your personal information secure is important. Strong privacy and security has been built into the app and you’re always in control of what you share and when.

What’s coming up next for the app
The Govt.nz app will continue to grow, with planned updates including:
- More services: access more agency services directly in the app.
- Secure in-app messaging and notifications: get notifications though a secure channel rather than a less secure channel, for example, text message, email or letter.
- Digital identity credentials: share your information securely in a digital format. A range of accredited digital identity credentials will be available in the app from government, banks and other trusted organisations.
- Payments: securely and easily make digital payments to government agencies via the app.
