  • help people to access and use the collective knowledge of the nation and make information readily available
  • preserve New Zealand’s documentary heritage for future generations
  • hold collections of research material
  • house the Alexander Turnbull Library — a storehouse of words, pictures and sounds documenting the activities of people in NZ and the Pacific.

Te Pouhuaki the National Librarian is responsible for leading all National Library services in NZ.
