Family Court

The Family Court is a part of New Zealand’s District Court and can help you and your whānau work out disagreements and family law issues.

The Family Court can help with matters relating to:

  • family violence
  • the care and protection of children and young people
  • parenting arrangements
  • child support
  • separation and divorce
  • relationship property (property and assets from a marriage, civil union, or de facto relationship)
  • adoption and surrogacy
  • will disputes
  • the treatment of people held in compulsory care with mental illness, intellectual disability and substance addiction
  • managing property and welfare decisions for adults who have lost their mental capacity.

Use the ‘Find us’ search on the Ministry of Justice website:

  • Under ‘Court, tribunal or other’, select ‘Family Court’
  • Select an ‘Available location’
  • Click ‘Search’.
