NZeTA and visitor visas

You must have the right travel documents to board your flight or ship to New Zealand. Most people will need a visa or a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA).

Check if you need an NZeTA or a visitor visa

Some people can use an NZeTA to travel to New Zealand and others need to get a visa — which one you need depends on your passport and situation.

For example, if you have a passport from a visa waiver country, you can travel without a visa but you need to get an NZeTA before you travel.

Some travellers do not need an NZeTA or a visa, including:

  • Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport
  • people who already have a valid visa for New Zealand (this can be a work, student, visitor, resident or permanent resident visa).

Use Immigration New Zealand’s online tool to find out what you need and how to get it.
