Joining KiwiSaver when you start work
When you start a new job, you'll automatically be enrolled in KiwiSaver if you're eligible and not a member already. You can also join through your current employer or directly with a provider.
When you start a new job, if you're not already a member and are eligible, your employer will automatically enrol you into their default KiwiSaver scheme. Tell them if you want to join a different scheme.
You can only opt out of KiwiSaver if:
- you've been automatically enrolled by your new employer
- you were enrolled before you turned 18 and didn't have your parent's or guardian's consent — you must opt out before you turn 19.
If you choose to join KiwiSaver voluntarily, you can’t opt out.
When you start a new job
You can choose to opt out after you've been at your new job for 2 weeks — you must opt out before you've been there 8 weeks.
If you were under 18 when first enrolled
If you were incorrectly enrolled before you turned 18, you may be able to opt out before you turn 19.
Enrol with your employer
If you aren't already a member, you can join KiwiSaver at any time through your employer. Once you join you can’t opt out, but you may be able to take a contributions holiday.
If you're already a member, tell your employer so they can start contributions to your scheme.
Join a scheme directly
You can join a KiwiSaver scheme directly if you're:
- an employee and you want to sort out your own KiwiSaver
- a contractor, or
Once you join you can’t opt out, but you may be able to take a contributions holiday.
