Births, Deaths and Marriages Labour Day opening hours
Births, Deaths and Marriages will be closed on Monday 23 October for Labour Day. During this time a call out service is available for urgent death registrations and other urgent matters, please contact BDM for further information. The office will reopen with full services on Tuesday 24 October.
False claims about birth certificates
There have been online claims about birth certificates that aren’t true. New Zealand birth certificates:
- aren’t linked to bonds or financial institutions
- only have serial numbers to make it easier to store and find them in the birth registry — these aren’t shared with other agencies, and
- can’t usually be used on their own as proof of identity.
