Births, Deaths and Marriages
Whānautanga, Matenga, Mārenatanga
Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) registers and maintains New Zealand birth, death, marriage, civil union and name change information, and issues certificates and printouts.
False claims about birth certificates
There have been online claims about birth certificates that aren’t true. New Zealand birth certificates:
- aren’t linked to bonds or financial institutions
- only have serial numbers to make it easier to store and find them in the birth registry — these aren’t shared with other agencies, and
- can’t usually be used on their own as proof of identity.
New BDM fees
Fees for birth, death, marriage and civil union products have changed. The new fees apply to applications received after 21 May 2017.
The fee change process and results of the public consultation are in the consultation document.
