New New Zealand

Designed by: Peter Malcouronne from Auckland

This humble submission has elements of old and new. The left panel ties my flag to the existing ensign, but in a fresh and bold way. Then there's the striking black and white striped panel incorporating what for many are the national colours of our country. From Lovelock to Williams to Halberg to Snell to Walker to Adams, New Zealanders have proudly worn the black and white singlet. But there's more to this design than simple chest-beating patriotism. The seven black stripes represent the canoes of the Great Fleet - Aotea, Te Arawa, Kurahaupō, Mātaatua, Tainui, Tākitimu and Tokomaru.
