This bold design incorporates the strong primary colours - red, black, white - of the Tino Rangatiratanga ensign. In 2009, the Government recognised this flag as the national Maori flag of New Zealand. In my view it is a gorgeous and striking design, but some (predominantly Pakeha) New Zealanders feel it excludes them. Hence the large blue star in this submission. This deftly ties my ensign to the current New Zealand flag - and I believe makes this a flag of inclusiveness and national unity.
