The long list
The Panel reviewed all 10,292 suggested flag designs and announced an official long list of 40 flag designs. The designs included in the long list went forward for further investigation as part of the official design review process. On 1 September 2015, the Panel announced 4 alternative designs to rank in the first binding referendum.
Following this process, Parliament extended the number of alternatives to 5, adding a fifth option for ranking in the first postal referendum.
In an open letter to all New Zealanders, the Panel explained how the designs in the long list were chosen.

Please note that the 'Modern Hundertwasser' design has been removed from the long list following a copyright claim by the Hundertwasser Non-Profit Foundation.
